About XYZ D65 and OKLCH

CIE XYZ is the reference space every other space is defined from. Converters use it as the common ground between formats.

OKLCH is OKLab in polar form: lightness, chroma and hue. Tailwind CSS v4 uses it for its whole palette because changing lightness keeps the hue stable.

How the conversion works

We read the XYZ D65 value, convert it to CIE XYZ with the matrices from the CSS Color 4 specification and then into OKLCH. Values outside the target gamut are mapped by the CSS Color 4 algorithm, which keeps lightness and hue and reduces chroma.
