About HEX and OKLab

HEX writes red, green and blue as two hexadecimal digits each, like #ff5733. It is the most common way to write colors on the web and in design tools.

OKLab is a modern perceptual color space from 2020. Equal steps look equal to the eye, which makes gradients and mixes cleaner than in RGB or HSL.

How the conversion works

We read the HEX value, convert it to CIE XYZ with the matrices from the CSS Color 4 specification and then into OKLab. Values outside the target gamut are mapped by the CSS Color 4 algorithm, which keeps lightness and hue and reduces chroma.
