About HSB / HSV and OKLCH

HSV, also called HSB, uses hue, saturation and value. Photoshop, Figma and most color pickers use it for the square picker.

OKLCH is OKLab in polar form: lightness, chroma and hue. Tailwind CSS v4 uses it for its whole palette because changing lightness keeps the hue stable.

How the conversion works

We read the HSB / HSV value, convert it to CIE XYZ with the matrices from the CSS Color 4 specification and then into OKLCH. Values outside the target gamut are mapped by the CSS Color 4 algorithm, which keeps lightness and hue and reduces chroma.
