About OKLab and HWB

OKLab is a modern perceptual color space from 2020. Equal steps look equal to the eye, which makes gradients and mixes cleaner than in RGB or HSL.

HWB describes a color by its hue plus how much white and black are mixed in. It is part of CSS Color 4 and is handy for tints and shades.

How the conversion works

We read the OKLab value, convert it to CIE XYZ with the matrices from the CSS Color 4 specification and then into HWB. Values outside the target gamut are mapped by the CSS Color 4 algorithm, which keeps lightness and hue and reduces chroma.
