About OKLab and Display P3

OKLab is a modern perceptual color space from 2020. Equal steps look equal to the eye, which makes gradients and mixes cleaner than in RGB or HSL.

Display P3 is the wide color gamut of modern Apple screens and many phones. It reaches about 25% more colors than sRGB and is written as color(display-p3 r g b).

How the conversion works

We read the OKLab value, convert it to CIE XYZ with the matrices from the CSS Color 4 specification and then into Display P3. Values outside the target gamut are mapped by the CSS Color 4 algorithm, which keeps lightness and hue and reduces chroma.
