About OKLab and XYZ D65

OKLab is a modern perceptual color space from 2020. Equal steps look equal to the eye, which makes gradients and mixes cleaner than in RGB or HSL.

CIE XYZ is the reference space every other space is defined from. Converters use it as the common ground between formats.

How the conversion works

We read the OKLab value, convert it to CIE XYZ with the matrices from the CSS Color 4 specification and then into XYZ D65. Values outside the target gamut are mapped by the CSS Color 4 algorithm, which keeps lightness and hue and reduces chroma.
