About OKLCH and OKLab

OKLCH is OKLab in polar form: lightness, chroma and hue. Tailwind CSS v4 uses it for its whole palette because changing lightness keeps the hue stable.

OKLab is a modern perceptual color space from 2020. Equal steps look equal to the eye, which makes gradients and mixes cleaner than in RGB or HSL.

How the conversion works

We read the OKLCH value, convert it to CIE XYZ with the matrices from the CSS Color 4 specification and then into OKLab. Values outside the target gamut are mapped by the CSS Color 4 algorithm, which keeps lightness and hue and reduces chroma.
