About Display P3 and HSB / HSV

Display P3 is the wide color gamut of modern Apple screens and many phones. It reaches about 25% more colors than sRGB and is written as color(display-p3 r g b).

HSV, also called HSB, uses hue, saturation and value. Photoshop, Figma and most color pickers use it for the square picker.

How the conversion works

We read the Display P3 value, convert it to CIE XYZ with the matrices from the CSS Color 4 specification and then into HSB / HSV. Values outside the target gamut are mapped by the CSS Color 4 algorithm, which keeps lightness and hue and reduces chroma.
